Most installed fences cost $20 to $60 per linear foot in 2026, which is $3,000 to $9,000 for 150 feet. Those are national numbers. A Saint Paul job is priced from the material, the footage, the gates, the post depth our frost calls for and how easy it is to get into the yard.
The price ranges on this page are national figures published by HomeGuide for 2026. They are not quotes from The Saint Paul Fence Company. Local labor, material prices and what we find in your yard move a job up or down. Last checked October 2026.
How much does a fence cost per foot?
| Material | Installed cost per foot |
|---|---|
| Chain link | $9 to $30 |
| Wood | $20 to $50 |
| Vinyl | $30 to $60 |
| Aluminum | $25 to $75 |
| Wrought iron | $50 to $85 |
Many Saint Paul lots are only 40 feet wide, so the fence is shorter than the national examples assume. Short jobs do not always price at the low end per foot, because travel, setup, the gate and the corner posts are spread over fewer feet.
How much does a 6-foot wood privacy fence cost?
The national range for a 6-foot privacy fence is $25 to $60 per foot installed. Totals by length for the general $20 to $60 range are below. A tall solid fence needs more boards and heavier posts than a 4-foot picket, so expect it in the upper part of each row.
| Fence length | Typical installed cost |
|---|---|
| 50 feet | $1,000 to $3,000 |
| 100 feet | $2,000 to $6,000 |
| 150 feet | $3,000 to $9,000 |
| 200 feet | $4,000 to $12,000 |
What is the cheapest fence to have installed?
Chain link is the cheapest, from about $9 per foot. The cheapest solid fence is pressure-treated pine with dog-ear boards. To keep a large dog in the yard on a budget, 5-foot chain link does the job for the least money. It gives no privacy, so some owners use it on the sides nobody looks through and spend on wood where they sit.
Is black aluminum cheaper than wrought iron or vinyl?
Aluminum is cheaper than wrought iron and overlaps with vinyl. The national ranges are $25 to $75 per foot for aluminum, $50 to $85 for wrought iron and $30 to $60 for vinyl. On a salted Saint Paul street aluminum has one more point in its favor: it does not rust.
How much extra does a gate cost?
A gate is quoted as its own item. The price depends on the width, the material, the hardware and the posts that carry it. A 4-foot walk gate to the alley costs the least. A double gate for a car or a gate with an operator costs the most. Gate posts are bigger and deeper than line posts, and that is part of the price.
How much extra for a slope, brush or an old fence?
We price these once we have seen them. Taking down an old fence and digging out its footings is labor and dump fees. So is clearing buckthorn, vines and volunteer trees that have grown through the old line. A bluff lot or a yard reached only through a narrow gap beside the garage means carrying everything by hand, and that adds hours.
I got three quotes and they are far apart. Which one is realistic?
Usually the one that describes the same job as the others in the most detail. Line the quotes up and check the footage, the height, the grade of wood or vinyl, the post size, the post depth, the number of gates, tear-out and haul-away. Post depth is the line to read twice here. A 2-foot hole is cheap to dig and it is the reason fences in this climate fail.
Does a fence add value to my home?
It helps a sale more than it adds a set dollar amount. Buyers with dogs or young children look for a fenced yard, and a fence in bad shape counts against a house. Do not count on getting the full cost back. For property taxes, the county assessor decides whether a fence changes your value.
