We build chain link backstops for baseball and softball fields at schools, parks, churches and league fields in and around Saint Paul. That covers the backstop itself, wing fences, dugout fencing and the sideline and outfield fence that ties the field together.
A backstop is the tallest fence most sites will ever have, and it stands in open ground with nothing to break the wind. The frame is heavy pipe, the footings are large and deep, and the fabric is a heavier gauge where balls hit it most. Frost depth applies here as much as anywhere. A backstop post that lifts leaves the whole frame out of true. Many backstops have an overhang at the top to stop foul balls, and that adds to the load on the posts.
Each one is sized for the field and the age of the players. We measure the site, ask who uses it and price the design that fits. Work is usually planned for late fall or early spring, outside the season, and before or after the ground is frozen.
Backstops in Saint Paul: common questions
Can you repair a backstop without replacing it?
Often. Curled or torn fabric, bent rails and loose ties are replaced on the existing frame if the posts are straight and solid at the base.
How long does a backstop take to build?
It depends on the size and on how long the footings need to cure before the frame is loaded. We give dates with the quote so the field schedule can be planned around them.
Do you fence the rest of the field?
Yes. Sideline, outfield and dugout fencing and gates for mowers can be built with the backstop or added later.
