Short answers to questions we hear from homeowners in Saint Paul and the East Metro. Our longer guides on cost, permits, repairs and neighbors are linked at the foot of the page.
How deep should fence posts be set?
Deeper than the frost goes. For buildings, the Minnesota State Building Code sets the minimum frost footing depth at 3.5 feet in the southern zone, which covers Saint Paul and its suburbs, and 5 feet in the northern zone (Minnesota Rules 1303.1600). We use that as the yardstick for fence posts. A post set 2 feet deep will move here.
Should posts be set in concrete, gravel or foam?
Concrete, gravel or foam each have a place. Concrete is right for gate posts, corners, ends and any solid fence that catches wind. Gravel packed around a line post drains well and can work in wet ground. Foam is fast, but we do not rely on it for gates or tall privacy fence.
How long should I wait before staining a new wood fence?
Wait before staining until the wood is dry. Pressure-treated boards arrive wet and may need several weeks to a few months. Put a few drops of water on a board. If they soak in, go ahead. If they bead, wait. Stain also needs mild, dry weather, so a fall fence is often stained the next spring.
How much does it cost to stain or seal a fence?
The cost to stain or seal a fence depends on its square footage, both faces, and on how much cleaning the wood needs first. Ask us to list it as a separate line so you can decide later.
Can I use deck screws to fix loose pickets?
Yes, deck screws are fine if they are rated for exterior use. Use stainless steel on cedar, because plain coated screws can leave dark stains around the heads. Do not use indoor screws. They rust through in a couple of seasons.
Can a faded vinyl fence be painted?
A vinyl fence can be painted with a paint made for vinyl, but treat it as a last resort. The paint will need redoing, and dark colors heat the panel in summer sun and can distort it. Washing off the chalky film often brings back enough color.
I want a double gate for an RV or trailer but my posts are weak. Reinforce or rebuild?
Rebuild. A double gate wide enough for an RV or trailer puts a heavy, swinging load on two posts. Those need to be larger steel or timber posts, set deep in concrete below the frost. Bracing weak fence posts will not hold a wide gate through a winter.
Does a new fence raise my property taxes?
Only the assessor can say whether a fence changes your property taxes. In Saint Paul that is the Ramsey County Assessor. A fence is a small item compared with the house and land.
The only firm number is a written quote for your own yard, and the estimate is free. Call (651) 362-2183 or text us a photo of the fence line.
