Take photos before you move anything, then call your insurer and a fence company. Photograph the cause as well as the fence: the fallen limb, the uprooted tree, the snow that was piled on it.
Half my fence blew down. Who can fix it fast and what will it cost?
If your fence blew down, call or text us a photo and tell us roughly how many feet are on the ground. A section with broken posts is a major repair, $900 to $2,500 on national 2026 figures. Saint Paul has a lot of big old boulevard and yard trees, and one summer storm can bring down limbs on fences all over a neighborhood. Crews fill up within a day or two, so get on the list early.
My dogs are in the yard and the fence is open to the road. What can be done right away?
Tell us on the call that dogs are in the yard or that there is a pool, and we treat it as urgent. The quick fix is to brace what is still standing and close the hole with temporary panels. The permanent repair follows once materials are in hand.
Is there an extra charge for emergency or weekend fence repair?
Ask before anyone comes out, because companies handle emergency or weekend calls differently. Some add a fee, some do not offer it. A common way to keep the cost down is a quick temporary closure now and the real repair during the normal work week.
Does homeowners insurance cover a fence knocked down by a storm or a tree?
Many policies do, usually under coverage for other structures on the property. Whether your insurance will cover a fence in your case depends on the policy, the deductible and what caused the damage, and that is a question for your agent or insurer. Small repairs can fall below the deductible. We give you a written, itemized estimate to send in.
My neighbor's tree fell on my fence. Whose insurance pays?
In most cases your own policy covers your fence, even though the neighbor's tree fell on it. It can be different if the tree was plainly dead or dangerous and the neighbor had been told. Your insurer makes that call. We replace the broken sections and keep the rest when the material can still be matched.
The insurer offered much less than the repair quote because the fence is old. Now what?
Find out how the figure was reached. A policy may pay only the depreciated value of an old fence, not the cost to build new. Ask for the adjuster's breakdown in writing and answer with an itemized estimate. If the gap stays, repair only the storm damage and leave the rest for later.
The storm knocked the fence down and my neighbor says it is mine. Who pays?
The first question is whose land the fence is on. A fence inside your lot is yours to repair. Minnesota does have a partition fence law, Minnesota Statutes chapter 344, that talks about equal shares, but it was written for farm fences and a city may exempt small lots from it. Only a licensed land surveyor can say where the line is. Our page on shared fences covers this in more detail.
